The involvement of youth in marine conservation has increased over time brought by the recognition of climate impacts to humans and biodiversity. Young people bring innovative and brilliant perspectives addressing pressing issues such as marine pollution, unsustainable fishing, and climate change. Their passion and engagement have empowered future generations as leaders to fight for a sustainable future.

To demonstrate youth empowerment toward sustainable ocean development, PEMSEA and the National Ocean Science Museum of the Republic of Korea organized the East Asian Seas Youth Forum in the Korea Ocean Science Museum on April 15-18, 2024. 19 selected participants of the forum came from the country partners of PEMSEA in the East Asian Region who have a background in youth-led campaigns, advocacy, research, and policy on ocean conservation.

“We must work together to leverage the strengths we have, share knowledge, and promote impactful initiatives for the development of East Asian waters. We look forward to the activities of young East Asian representatives as the next-generation leaders in the field of marine ecosystem conservation”, said Mr. Kim Oichul, President of the National Ocean Science Museum.

The youth forum had interactive activities and learning sessions on marine biodiversity initiatives and conduct of research with experts as speakers and an on-site activity promoted the appreciation of the seas in the country.

“During the forum, I was able to engage in spirited discussions with dedicated youth from East Asia about what we need to do to conserve our coasts and oceans. Coming from diverse culture, it struck me as a meaningful opportunity for us to unite for a common cause – ocean conservation”, said Minsu Yu, youth delegate from the Republic of Korea.

A youth declaration was made to call for urgent actions towards protecting our seas for a sustainable and livable future.
