ST 1.5 – Area-based marine ecosystem management to cope with Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework
Presenters at the session entitled Area-based Marine Ecosystem Management for the Implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, held on 7 November at the EAS Congress. (PRF)
The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) calls for protecting 30% of the Earth’s surface, highlighting the need for enhanced marine ecosystem management.
Nature-based solutions are vital for both climate change mitigation and adaptation and should be integrated into national policies.
Regional collaboration and knowledge exchange among East Asian countries is essential in advancing marine conservation efforts.
Held on 7 November at the EAS Congress in Xiamen, the workshop shared current national marine management practices, focusing on area-based conservation efforts.
The lively discussions explored various strategies to strengthen future marine policies and enhance cooperation in alignment with the international framework, the GBF.
The session aligns with Action 8 of the Xiamen Ministerial Declaration by recommending the refinement and updating of state of the ocean and coasts reports and aligning it with international agreements to build innovative, climate-smart, socially inclusive and resource efficient ocean economies.
Opening Remarks were given by the President of the Korea Marine Environment Corporation (KOEM). (PRF)
