The involvement of the youth in marine conservation has increased over time, brought about by the recognition of climate impacts to humans and biodiversity.
Young people bring innovative and brilliant perspectives to address pressing issues such as marine pollution, unsustainable fishing and climate change. Their passion and engagement have empowered future generations as the next generation of leaders fighting for a sustainable future.
To demonstrate youth empowerment toward sustainable ocean development, PEMSEA and the National Ocean Science Museum of the Republic of Korea organized the East Asian Seas Youth Forum at the Korea Ocean Science Museum from 15 to 18 April 2024.
A total of 19 selected participants came from the country partners of PEMSEA in the East Asian Region who have backgrounds in youth-led campaigns, advocacy, research and policy on ocean conservation.
“We must work together to leverage the strengths we have, share knowledge and promote impactful initiatives for the development of East Asian waters. We look forward to the activities of young East Asian representatives as the next-generation of leaders in the field of marine ecosystem conservation,” said Kim Oichul, President of the National Ocean Science Museum.
The youth forum had interactive activities and learning sessions on marine biodiversity initiatives, plus the conduct of research with experts as speakers. An on-site activity further promoted the appreciation of our shared oceans.
“During the forum, I was able to engage in spirited discussions with dedicated youth members from East Asia about what we need to do to conserve our coasts and oceans. Coming from diverse cultures, it struck me as a meaningful opportunity for us to unite for a common cause – the conservation of our shared resources,” said Minsu Yu, youth delegate from the Republic of Korea.
A youth declaration was made to call for urgent actions towards protecting our seas for a sustainable and livable future.
