Partners new and old had a wonderful time celebrating friendships and shared goals during the Partnership Night of the 8th East Asian Seas (EAS) Congress, held in the evening of 7 November at the sprawling Grand Ballroom of the Xiamen International Convention Center in Xiamen, China.
Dr. Vann Monyneath, Chair of the EAS Partnership Council, opened the night with a message of gratitude and collaboration. Representing PEMSEA’s Executive Committee, Dr. Monyneath emphasized the vital contributions of the PEMSEA Resource Facility, the Ministry of Natural Resources of China and the Xiamen Municipal Government in making the 8th EAS Congress an unbridled success.
Traditional Xiamen performances through music and dance mesmerized the audience, who rekindled old ties and shared new tales throughout the night. The evening event also honored the recipients of the ‘Humans of East Asian Seas’ awards, acknowledging 30 individuals for their transformational change for the East Asian region. Top awardee Ms. Masako Bannai Otsuka shared a heartfelt message on behalf of all ‘Humans of East Asian Seas’ awardees.
Led by Executive Committee members and Dr. Chua Thia-Eng, the awarding served as a highlight of the evening, bringing attention to the inspiring efforts of all honorees. A rousing message from Deputy Director General Wang Antao concluded the evening festivities, which ran well into the night.
